Anthropic just signed a Nobel laureate
John Jumper is leaving Google DeepMind for Anthropic. If the name doesn't ring a bell, the work does: he led AlphaFold, the AI that predicted 200 million protein structures and collapsed a 50-year-old biology problem into an afternoon. He shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Demis Hassabis for it. Nine years at DeepMind, and now he's walking across the street.
His reason is the interesting part. He says the most important question in AI right now is how you build systems powerful enough to do real science and trustworthy enough to actually deploy, and he thinks Anthropic is better positioned to answer it than the place he helped build. That's a brutal thing to say about your former employer, especially one whose CEO shares your Nobel.
This is the third marquee move in a month. Noam Shazeer went to OpenAI the same week. Karpathy went to Anthropic in May. The frontier architects have become franchise players, traded between three teams, and the press release is the scoreboard. Anthropic keeps winning these.
And it fits a plan. Anthropic spent 2026 quietly building AI-for-science infrastructure, wet labs, agents that do biology, research partnerships. Jumper is the clearest signal yet that the next race isn't chatbots or coding agents, it's putting an agent in a lab and letting it run real experiments. The man who made AI useful to biologists once is going to try to do it again, with more compute and fewer constraints.
