Anthropic's IPO Price Rests on a 2028 Number Nobody Can Check
Reuters got two people close to Anthropic's financials to describe the forecast underwriting its IPO: $190 to $200 billion in revenue, in 2028. As recently as May, the company was publicly citing a $47 billion run rate. So the pitch to Wall Street is roughly 4x, in two years.
The mechanic here is worth understanding. Bankers are pricing Anthropic on enterprise value against forward revenue, not trailing β standard for high-growth companies that aren't profitable yet, but the further out the forecast, the more the valuation is just a story with a discount rate attached. Two years out is unusually far. It means the price isn't anchored to anything observable today.
Meanwhile Dario Amodei spent Sunday arguing with investor Gavin Baker, who blames Amodei's risk warnings for the public's souring on AI. Amodei's response was that his writing has been "about equally balanced between risks and benefits," and that the real problem is elsewhere: "I think it is fundamentally a crisis of trust. Ordinary people don't trust companies, governments, or the tech industry." His fix isn't better messaging β it's delivery. Companies need to "actually cure cancer," not keep promising to.
He also rejected the framing that regulation means choosing between an unregulated free-for-all and a few labs holding all the power. Rules of the road, in his telling, can constrain frontier companies and leave room for open weights at the same time.
