Meta Opens Muse to Hardware Hackers: Open Firmware, Linux SDK, Free USB-C Link

Meta wants its personal agent to leave the phone. On Friday it launched Muse Gadgets, an open-source project for building your own hardware that talks to Muse, the agent that books travel, fills out forms and shops for you. The kit is open-source firmware plus a Linux SDK, with starter ideas like an e-ink status display or an HDMI stick that puts Muse on the TV.

The hardware bar is deliberately low. Raspberry Pi and ESP32 boards work. Meta also built Muse Home Link, a USB-C device, and is giving 5,000 of them free to Muse subscribers while supplies last, shipping in a few weeks. The announcement post pulled about 30,000 views within hours. There is a Discord for builders and the project lives at gadgets.muse.ai.

The interesting move is who Meta is recruiting. OpenAI is building its own device with a famous designer. Meta is doing the opposite: let thousands of hobbyists find the form factor, then copy the winner. Muse already connects to Shopify, Dropbox, Slack, smart speakers and TVs, so a gadget is mostly a new surface for an agent that already has hands.

The catch is the same one that got Apple to tighten macOS Full Disk Access this week. Every new device is another place an agent with purchasing power can be triggered from. Meta is handing out the endpoints first. The permission model for a $5 ESP32 that can tell your agent to buy something is the part worth watching.
